Insect Repellent Treatment
How does it work?
Borne Mosquito Repellent Clothing uses an active ingredient called permethrin. It is safe and effective and has been in use as a mosquito repellent for centuries. Permethrin is based on the natural extracts from the chrysanthemum flower, and is approved by the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority.
The treatment keeps mozzies away from areas of your body covered by clothing. It's halo effect will reduce mozzie bites on nearby exposed areas of skin such as your forearms and neck.
See our How it works page to learn more.
How effective is the insect repellent?
Pretty darn effective! Research shows that permethrin treated clothing that tested at 66% knockdown in the laboratory achieved a 97% bite reduction in the field.
Please note that a small item of repellent clothing provides less repellency than a larger one. You may need to adjust the amount and type of repellent clothing you wear, depending on the number of biting insects that are present. For example, you might prefer to wear long sleeves instead of short, or add socks. Topical repellent can be used for exposed skin, and is especially recommended for heavily infested locations.
Learn more about Knockdown Testing methodology and the results of the US Army/USDA Research Study on permethrin treated clothing.
How long will the repellent last for?
Our clothing has been tested up to 70 standard washes. At that point, the clothing’s protection was 96% as effective as it was to begin with. We expect that with normal product care, your garment’s protective goodness will last longer than the shirt itself!
Does the repellent treatment smell?
Not even slightly! Our treatment is completely odourless. To the naked eye or nose you can't tell the difference between a treated and untreated garment.
If you can smell something, we reckon you could probably use a shower.
Is the repellent treatment safe?
Yes! Our garments are non-toxic and skin safe! Our garments have been approved for use by the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority. The treatment is also safe for use around pets (unless your pets are mosquitos).
How should I care for the product?
You can treat our shirts like any other and they won’t lose their mozzie protection. We recommend a cold wash and line drying in shade to keep the colours crisp and avoid damaging the design.
Our garments shouldn’t be dry cleaned, as this can affect the mosquito repellent treatment.
What insects does it repel?
Borne Clothing has been registered to repel mosquitoes, ticks, sandflies, ants, midges and fleas.
Australian companies require extensive effectiveness data to prove a product's ability to repel insects. Many species and varieties of these insects have been tested, including many that can carry dangerous diseases.
How is this better than standard mozzie spray?
Our garments put insect repellent near your skin, instead of directly on it. The repellent barrier is invisible, odourless, and doesn't need you to keep reapplying it all day!

What is a Social Enterprise?
Social enterprises are organisations that work to make the world a better place.
We donate 50% of our profit to end malaria, source ethically made garments, and offset our carbon emissions. We partner with Avenue to provide meaningful work experiences, and manage our money with a bank that doesn’t invest in fossil fuels.
For us, being a social enterprise isn’t just about avoiding the bad stuff, it's about embracing the good.
Who do you donate your profit to?
Borne Clothing donates to United To Beat Malaria, a United Nations Foundation campaign on a mission to end malaria for good. Our first donation of $2000AUD contributed to an indoor-residual spraying campaign in Borno State, Nigeria.
To read more about the work they do, check out our 2021 Impact Report.
Do you have a physical shop?
Nope, just an internet one for now! We pop up at local Newcastle markets every now and then, so be sure to sign up to our mailing list to find out where and when.
